Plot
Fullmetal Alchemist is a fantasy manga set in the early twentieth century in a country called Amestris. In this imaginary world, alchemy is the science of transmuting a subject that allows changing the structure (under the law of equivalent exchange) through the use of an alchemical circle. This allows the alchemist, for example, to adjust an object if you have all the pieces and if you know the structure of the object, deform or other (even floors or walls), or again, destroy them or merge them. The best alchemists have the opportunity to sit an examination before joining the army, under the title of state alchemists.
Edward and Alphonse Elric were children living in a country village called Resembool. Their father Hohenheim (Hohenheim of Light in the anime and Van Hohenheim in the manga), a great alchemist, had left home when Edward was very young and Alphonse was practically a baby. Years later, their mother, Trisha Elric, died of a serious illness. After his death, Edward and Alphonse lived with Winry and her grandmother until he found a teacher of alchemy. After completing the training imposed by it, went home with the intention of reviving the dead mother through the alchemy circle they had found among his father's notes. The attempt failed and, instead of reviving the mother's body, you see a pile of flesh and bones, created at the cost of Edward's left leg and Alphonse's entire body. In a desperate attempt to save his brother, Edward sacrificed his right arm to bind Al's soul to armor. The arm and leg of Edward were replaced by two mechanical limbs called automail.
A State Alchemist named Roy Mustang came after the failed human transmutation of Ed and Al Realising the cleverness of Edward, Mustang suggested that the best way for the two boys to reach their goal was to become State Alchemists and work for him . Spurred by the proposal of man, Edward set out to become a State Alchemist, so you can use the resources available to State Alchemists and find a way to recover what he and Alphonse had lost. Eventually, the two brothers came to the attention of the philosopher's stone and began to look for certain that one could make him recover their bodies. Continuing their research they learned the secrets of the Philosopher's Stone they never wanted to find out they decided, well, trying to regain their bodies without having to resort to stone.
Terminology
Alchemy: In the context of Fullmetal Alchemist, alchemy is, in simple terms, a three-step process. The first is understanding the structure of matter, then breaking it down, and then redial.
State Alchemist: Alchemists of State serving a special branch of the army. Are selected through an examination consists of three tests (written, oral, practical) and are considered among the most powerful and talented alchemists. Inside the Army, the military rank of an alchemist was equivalent to that of a major.
Principle of equivalent exchange: According to this principle, a fundamental element of alchemy in Fullmetal Alchemist, to obtain a substance of a certain value, must sacrificing another of the same value. This principle can be lost only in the presence of a philosopher's stone.
